Introduction to the Course Readings
As you begin the nursing education sequence of MSN courses, you have three books available for use. Each will be emphasized in different courses. Learning in Adulthood by Merriam and Baumgartner is the primary text for this class. It is a highly theoretical book about adult learning. It provides an excellent foundation, but it is not a nursing text. Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty by Billings and Halstead and Teaching in Nursing and the Role of the Educator by Oermann, DeGagne, and Phillips are written for nurse educators. The two are similar in purpose and content. Some of the information may be repetitious, but it can be helpful to see similar information presented in different ways. All will be useful as you prepare your discussions and assignments. There is also excellent information in the course overview/lecture notes. Make note of the links to articles and videos embedded in the lecture notes.
