Week 1 Assignment: Andragogy and Pedagogy in Nursing Education

Due: Sunday night at 11:59pm Mountain Time

In this week’s assignment, you will examine the role of pedagogy and andragogy in nursing by reflecting on your own educational experiences. Philosophically, nursing education has embraced andragogy as a preferred model of teaching and learning, but that does not always carry over into practice.  In a 4-5 page, 1200- 1500 word paper, reflect on your own educational experiences in nursing school, applying what you learned in this week’s readings. You may need to do some additional research on traditional pedagogical practices since these are not discussed in depth in the course texts.  Address each of the following items:

1. In your nursing education to date, have you experienced more andragogical or pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning?  Provide examples to support your position.
2. Is there any significant difference in the andragogical or pedagogical practices of your undergraduate and graduate nursing programs? Should there be? Provide examples and documentation to support your position.
3. Compare nursing to another profession in the healthcare field. Is there a difference in the use of pedagogical and andragogical approaches in the instruction of students in these fields? In your view is this appropriate? Examples for you to consider could be physician assistants, physical therapists, laboratory technicians etc. These are just examples-there are many professions that you could explore. You may need to do additional research into the training of these professions to fully answer the prompt.
4. As an adult learner, describe how you relate to Knowles' theory of andragogy and McClusky's theory of margin as explained in chapter 5 of Learning in Adulthood. How do these and other educational theories support student centered learning?

Sources: You must use at least four references.  You may use the course texts but you must also have two additional scholarly resources.  One of the additional sources must be from a nursing journal.
